2021-12-21 Playground StoryWalk® Grand Opening

Information
First published on 13 December 2021 Posted in Library

Mrs. Sue Salzsieder, District Librarian, is excited and proud to host the grand opening of the Playground StoryWalk® located at Chilton Elementary School on December 21, 2021, 8:30AM at 421 Court ST, Chilton, WI 53014.

District Librarian Sue Salzsieder and the Chilton Public Library’s Glenny Whitcomb and Rebbecca Barry collaborated to write a successful 2021 AARP Community Challenge Grant to bring permanent StoryWalk®s to the Chilton Elementary School playground and Ledge View Nature Center. Pop-up StoryWalk®s will also appear at various parks and events throughout Calumet County. This project was one of six awarded in the state of Wisconsin in 2021. https://www.aarp.org/livable-communities/community-challenge/ Our StoryWalk® project focuses on bilingual Spanish/English books in order to build diversity appreciation while encouraging a lifelong love of reading and the great outdoors.

A StoryWalk® is a fun, educational activity that displays a children’s picture book at stations along a popular walking route in the community. Typically, pages from a children’s book are installed along a path. As you stroll along the path, you are directed to the next page in the story. StoryWalk® was first developed by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT. It was conceived as a way to inspire parents, teachers, and caregivers to take children out of doors for physical activity and to learn. StoryWalk®s help build children’s interest in reading while encouraging healthy activity for both adults and children - a perfect intergenerational activity. Stories will be changed four times per year.
